February 22, 2026
Convert Kindle to EPUB

Want to use your Kindle books with easyreads? You'll need to convert them to EPUB format first. Here's how in just 2 steps.

What You'll Need

  • A Kindle e-reader device (Paperwhite, Oasis, etc.)
  • Your Kindle serial number (found in Settings → Device Info)
  • Access to Amazon.com

Step 1: Download Your Books from Amazon

First, download your Kindle books directly from Amazon's website.

Go to Your Account

  1. Go to Amazon.com
  2. Click on your name in the top right
  3. Click Account
  1. Click Digital Services and Device Support
  2. Click Manage Content & Devices

Download Your Book

  1. You'll see a list of your Kindle books
  2. Find the book you want and click Download & transfer via USB
  3. Select your Kindle from the dropdown menu
  4. Click Download

An .azw file will download to your computer. This file is encrypted, so you'll need to remove the DRM protection before uploading to easyreads.

Step 2: Remove DRM Protection

The easiest way to remove DRM is through an online tool.

Find Your Kindle Serial Number

  1. On your Kindle device, go to Settings
  2. Tap Device Info
  3. Note your Serial Number

Use the DeDRM Tool

  1. Go to dedrm.com
  2. Upload your downloaded .azw file
  3. Enter your Kindle serial number
  4. Click Remove

The site will process your file and give you a DRM-free version you can download.

Step 3: Upload to easyreads

Now you can use your book with easyreads:

  1. Go to app.easyreads.ai
  2. Click Add Content
  3. Select your converted file
  4. Enjoy AI-powered audio narration!

Alternative Method: Using Calibre

If you don't have a physical Kindle device, you can use Calibre with the Kindle desktop app instead.

What You'll Need

  • Calibre - Free e-book software from calibre-ebook.com
  • DeDRM Plugin - From GitHub
  • Kindle for PC/Mac - Version 1.17 or 2.4 (older versions work better)

Steps

  1. Install Calibre
  2. Install the DeDRM plugin (Preferences → Plugins → Load plugin from file)
  3. Install an older version of Kindle for PC/Mac
  4. Download your books in the Kindle app
  5. Add the downloaded files to Calibre (DeDRM removes protection automatically)
  6. Convert to EPUB (select book → Convert books → Output: EPUB)
  7. Export the EPUB file

This method is more complex but works without a physical Kindle device.

Troubleshooting

"DRM removal failed"

  • Double-check your Kindle serial number
  • Make sure you're using the correct .azw file
  • Try the Calibre method instead

"I don't have a physical Kindle"

Use the Calibre method described above. You'll need to download books through the Kindle desktop app instead of Amazon's website.

"My book is in KFX format"

Newer Kindle books use KFX format which is harder to convert. Try:

  • Using the latest DeDRM tools
  • Converting with Calibre's KFX Input plugin

Why Convert to EPUB?

Kindle uses proprietary formats (AZW, AZW3, KFX) that only work in Amazon's apps. Converting to EPUB lets you:

  • Upload to easyreads for AI audio narration
  • Read on any e-reader or app
  • Own your books without platform lock-in

Why easyreads Over Kindle?

Once your books are converted, easyreads offers features Kindle doesn't:

Converting books you've purchased is generally considered fair use for personal backup purposes. However:

  • Only convert books you own
  • Don't share or distribute converted files
  • Check your local laws regarding DRM removal
